 Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala covering a very small area only 55 sq.km located in western slopes of Western Ghats. Established in 1984 and lies in the most northern part of Kerala. The headquarters of the sanctuary are situated in a small town which is 55 kms from Kannur named Iritty. The sanctuary adjoins the Central State Farm at Aralam. Place is located between 11°50' and 11°52' North and 75°49' and 75°57' East.
The elevation varies from 50m to 1145m. The highest peak which is 1145 m high is Katti Betta.
The temperature varies at different parts of the area. At the foothills it is from 21°C to 40°C and at higher locations it goes from 8°C to 21°C. The rainfall in the area is approximately 3,000mm per annum. The maximum rainfall in the month of June to August. Forest coast tropical evergreen and west coast semi evergreen forests are predominant. Within the forest there are approximately 490 ha plantations of teak and eucalyptus.
Vellapine (Vateria indica), Mesua ferrea, Mechilus macrantha, Calophyllum elatum, Cullenia rosayroona, Magnifera indica, Toona cillata, Myristica Species, Euphorbia Longana, Strobilanthes. The common trees in the semievergreen areas are Cinnamomum Zeylanicum, Hopea parviflora, Largestroemia lanceolata, Xyliaxylocarpa, Mallotus, Philippinensis are found in the evergreen area.
The type animals and birds normally found in Western Ghats are seen here. There are different type of deer boar, elephant and bison are quiet common. Other animals like Leopard, jungle cat and different type of squirrels are also seen.
The headquarters of the sanctuary are at Sultan Bathery and it comes under Wayanand Division. The sanctuary comes under direct charge of An Assistant wildlife whose office is at Chathiroor Irutti.
To reach Aralam sanctuary by road one can reach from Thalasseri which is 45 km and Kannur which is also 45 kms. The nearest railway station is Thalassery and the nearest airport is Kozhikkod which is 113 km from Irutti. The forest department is taking steps to improve the infrastructure for tourist development which is limited at present.
