Fishing Lingo

Fly fishing : is an ancient and distinct angling method, developed primarily for salmonids (trout and salmon, mostly) and now extended to other species such as pike, bass, and carp, as well as a wide range of marine species. Artificial flies are "tied" onto a hook with thread, fur, feathers and other materials - in sizes and colours to match naturally occurring food or simply to excite a fish. There are two basic forms of fly fishing, dry or wet. Dry flies are coated with a floatant and sit on the surface of the water. They are mostly cast upstream in moving water when fishing for trout. Wet flies are divided into other types such as nymphs, lures and true wet flies and they are all fished beneath the Tour Bookingsurface of the water.

Fly-fishing : Fly-fishing is the toughest way to tangle with mahseer. One is limited by tackle more than anything else, although some decent fish have been landed from time to time under very trying conditions. While trout size tackle and flies (6 weight rod, small nymphs/lures/dries/etc.) bring out small mahseer in the 1-5lb sizes, a change in tackle is required for the larger ones. The rod needs to be in the 10-12-weight class and the flies should look like and have the action of a medium sized plug. The reel had better have a good drag since it's the first thing to go. Next are bearings. And the angler must be prepared for outstanding line-burns when the fish takes off for the next town.

Spinning : A lot easier than fly-fishing, spinning is one of the noblest ways of catching big mahseer. The lures are the right size and action. Serious tackle is available to those with access.

Lures : include Plugs, spoons and spinners. Plugs are the preferred lures on the bigger water, spoons are good all-round (long narrow types that swim through the water for fast water, broader spoons which grip the water better for silver runs, and spinners for smaller pools). Sizes generally follow the size of the water. On the whole, silver is the preferred color.

Bait / Ground Bait : Ground bait isbait scattered on the water to attract fish. Made from bits of Tour Bookingbread, boiled barley or worms, etc., they are thrown into the water to collect the fish.

Tackle : Apparatus used in fishing, as hook, line, rod, etc.

Fishing rod : A long slender rod, to which is attached the line for angling. There are different types of rods for different types of fishing.
