  SEVA MANDIR (Water harvesting )

http://www.sevamandir.org

Seva Mandir is working in 500 villages of tribal dominated Udaipur and Rajsamand districts of southern Rajasthan.
Under our livelihood improvement programme, Natural Resource Development is the major activity. Under this, they have assisted development of, around 15000 hectares of (both private and common) waste land and has constructed 30 water harvesting structures(anicuts).

Construction of masonary water harvesting structures (Anicut) to store rain water for recharging wells or for use in direct irrigation thereby increasing the productivity of agriculture crop. these are mainly constructed on streams with storage capacity varying according to site conditions and . the anicuts are basically small in nature. The height of the anicut above ground level is about 22 feet and it is constructed on a river bed. Anicuts are built to serve many purposes among which, recharge of ground water, providing water for consumption for animals, for bathing for men and women, and providing a reservoir of water in water scarce years, are critical. Other than these tangible benefits, Seva Mandir is now increasingly using anicut construction to leverage people's participation in watershed development and reworking stakes on contested lands and is hence a very important element in watershed development . These storage tanks are a boon in a state where droughts are very common and has made the locals self reliant.

Besides water harvesting, the organisation also undertakes watershed development programmes in rural Rajasthan.
The activities undertaken in the watershed development programme are:

1. Soil and water conservation interventions in wastelands, agricultural land, pasture land etc.
2. Treatment of streams & nullahs by mechanical and vegetational means
3. Plantation on private and common wastelands
4. Construction of water harvesting structures
5. Formation of watershed users committee

WILDLIFE TRUST OF INDIA (Wildlife Conservation)

http://www.wildlifetrustofindia.org

WTI is a non-profit conservation organisation, committed to urgent action that prevents destruction of India's wildlife. Its principal concerns are crisis management and the provision of quick, efficient aid to those areas that require it the most. In the longer term it hopes to achieve, through proactive reforms, an atmosphere conducive to conserving India's wildlife and its habitat.

The aim of the "Species recovery" division aims to conduct projects that help recover the population of identified threatened species through appropriate measures that lead to a positive change in the status of the species. As a pilot case the central Indian population of the wild buffalo and that of the tiger in Valmiki Tiger Reserve are to be taken up as species recovery projects.

The organisation's Habitat recovery projects envisage reclamation of crucial wildlife habitat through habitat management or improvement. While currently the Wild Land programme is specifically designed to take care of fragmented habitats and the intervening corridors through acquisition and securement measures, the habitat recovery division of Wild Species would deal with other habitat initiatives. To start with, the rhino habitat in Assam in north east India has been taken as a pilot project for this division

The mission of WTI is to initiate and catalyse urgent action to prevent the destruction of India's wildlife.

Provide emergency assistance to protect endangered Indian wildlife species, with particular priority to the tiger, the elephant and the rhino.
Catalyse action by the government and by people in general for conservation of wildlife and its habitat.
Provide aid in terms of expertise, finance, equipment etc. to individuals to assist wildlife in times of crisis.
Maintain and boost the morale of wildlife protection staff in the field by equipping them to discharge their responsibilities more effectively.
Support research programmes, field action projects, and other activities that encourage proactive action for conservation of wildlife and wild habitats.
Produce and disseminate public awareness material and communication strategies that will promote the main objectives of the Trust.
Acquire and set aside land for wildlife conservation and assist in its management.

WildAid's Program Models

http://www.wildaid.org

WildAid developed its field protection program models in the Russian Far East, where within five years the Siberian tiger population was stabilized from a state of precipitous decline; this population is now thought to be the only subspecies of tigers in the world that is actually increasing. Based on this model, our pilot programs, such as "Surviving Together" at Khao Yai National Park in Thailand, have accomplished significant reductions in poaching in key parks. Our demand- oriented programs have also been successful - the Asian Conservation Awareness Program (ACAP) has produced a popular mass media awareness program to reduce endangered species consumption in Asia that features over 30 top Asian celebrities and reaches 500 million people a week - at a minimal cost of less than $100,000 a year.

WildAid's innovative solutions to conservation threats are credible, efficient and cost- effective, and deliver direct and measurable results.

ACAP objective
primary objective is to reduce consumer demand for wildlife products by directly influencing the attitudes of consumers. This is where ACAP differs from other campaigns.

best reflected in ACAP campaign message "When the buying stops, the killing can too."
