Far into the North-East region where the mighty Brahmaputtra River gracefully rolls over a range of picturesque hills and plains, lies a lonely landscape of tropical evergreen forest that boast of protecting the largest population of the rare one-horned rhinoceros in the world. Undisturbed by human presence, the park falls on the National Highway 37 that runs through it, and one can often have glimpses of the rhino grazing on wide-open grasslands, unmindful of the crane lazing the sun on its back. Sometimes elephants too come out into the open in search of food, and block the road only to add some spice to your long and uneventful journey.

Kaziranga also boast of an elusive tiger population, which occupies a major place in the list of mammals in the area. Though the chances of meeting the predator are less but an elephant ride through the heart of jungle never allows you to lose hope of encountering one. Another highlight of the park is the wild buffalo always ready to attack with its big sharp horns. Besides the sights of magnificent swamp deer, hog deer, bears, leopards, wild boar, hoolok gibbon, capped languor and rattle (badger) tend to offer a complete jungle trip far from the noisy world of man.

Best time to visit the Kaziranga National park is the period between November to March. Jorhat forms the nearest airport, 96-km away and Guwahati at a distance of 217 km. Apart from the world famous One-Horned Rhino and the Tiger the park is a paradise for bird watchers too. Hundreds and hundreds of Pelicans breed here. Other birds found in the area include the swamp partridge, red jungle fowl, Bengal florican, bar headed goose, whistling teal, egrets, herons, stork and many species of eagles like crested serpent eagle, pallas fishing eagle and the gray-headed fishing eagle.
